Conceiving a new series: The Setting
I recently started the first draft of book one in my Macy Moore Mysteries. I chose to set this series in Northern Michigan where I spent many happy summers at a music camp and where I met and fell in love with my husband of 37 years. The actual camp was in a methodist community called Bay View on Little Traverse Bay. I've been intrigued with the idea of 'tiny houses' lately so I made a fictional community (which for now I'm calling Cozy Haven) and plopped it into my memories of the community of cabins at Bayview. There's a pier on Lake Michigan. a sandy state park, and pine forest included in this community—all good places to find a dead body! Inspired by the beautiful upscale towns of Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs, across the bay in my fictional setting I've created a community called "The Estates." This offers a contrast ripe for conflicts. There is of course a Main Street with a town square, a park, cafes, book stores, and fudge shops—places for characters to meet, overhear conversations, and see things they shouldn't!
